Ruler Trivia

In my shop is an old metal ruler; it is beat up, bent, and worn. Its got four scales etched into the surface. One is centimeters subdivided into milimeters. One is inches subdivided into tenths of inches. One is inches subdivided into sixteenth inches.

The last scale is the question for you, faithful readers. It is marked every inch. But the number at each inch mark increases by 140. That is, it goes "140, 280, 420..." with each of those numbers an inch apart. What is the unit for that scale, and why? (Vaguely useful hint:

(At work, only one person could tell me what unit was on that scale. But most other people went "Ahah!" when I gave the answer, which tells me it was an interesting question.)

Hmmm...

I think it would be an approx for a douzième (print of course, not the watchmaking version).

I am ammused...not just by the ruler, but also by your hint...you do realize there is a length unit called "X unit"...the conversion is:

1 inch = 253 474 749 620 X unit

OK, full disclosure...I did look this up: http://www.onlineconversion.com/

Take care.

3 First guess, nope. Second guess, very close. But a little more specific...

4 Newsprint?

5 Newsprint's too thin. I'm guessing it'd be more like 200-300 per the inch.

6 Answer time. It's a scale for computer punch cards. The standard IBM punch cards were nominally 143 to the inch.
