No Fireworks For Me

I'm planning on staying indoors this New Year's Eve, because (a) it's raining, and (b) fireworks don't really do it for me anymore.

Most of the Marines in the barracks are planning on celebrating at a number of local watering holes, but that isn't my bag either.

So I guess I'll curl up with a good book. But the rest of you, have fun!

It's a Very Doors Christmas

I picked up a Doors CD for myself a few days ago. Then I happened upon the following video at the economics blog Newmark's Door. It's a holiday song medley, as if sung by the Doors.

Merry Christmas!

Woo hoo, today is the second-most important holiday in the Christian calendar. And I get to start celebrating a good twelve hours earlier than most of my family. Ha!

When we were young, we had to wait until a decent hour to open up presents. Lacking adult supervision, I'm going to start opening mine right now.

Get Off My Lawn

My roommate just had the TV news on. The weather report had a map with all the planes in flight over the continental US, as the weatherman described flight delays.

I remember the TV news when I was very young. The weather guy had magnets on a painted board, and he pushed them around to describe what was happening. When computerized weather graphics came out, that was totally cool. And now, they've got a live map of the planes in the air. *sigh*

Sandy Christmas

My new roommate executed part of his plan to make me more sociable today. (The secret to success: bribe me with food.) We went to the beach for a dinnertime cookout. The beach was empty, because it's cold and has been threatening to rain all day. Still, good food and good times. If we can't have snow, we'll at least enjoy the sand.

Dreaming of a Green Christmas

A Green Christmas would be nice. It's been rainy for most of the week. Today is beautiful, so maybe it'll stay that way. I'm going to my Gunny's house for a meal on the 25th, but I might go to the beach beforehand if it stays like this.

Stupid Fish

Next month's promotion scores just came out. My MOS is closed out, so there will be no new sergeants in January.

In related news, I was called to the Sergeant Major's office. This is normally not good for anyone below a Gunny. When I got there, I told that our squadron mascot was picking up, and would need a new namepatch with it's new rank, a sergeant.

The mascot is a frelling six-inch pirhana, that lives in a tank in the CO's office, so we have no mascot-related emotions towards it, because enlisted never get to interact with it. To the limited extent that one interacts with a fish anyway.

So the news that a fish is getting promoted but I'm not, didn't exactly fill me with glee.

The Superest

This one's a keeper- it's a comic called The Superest. There are two cartoonists. Cartoonist 1 draws a character with a power. Cartoonist 2 draws someone that can defeat 1's entry. They keep going, each new character defeating the first one.

For the full effect, start with the first entry.

Civic Subordination

Hooray! I am now the proud owner of a two-door 1995 Honda Civic. It's blue with a yellow lightning bolt painted across both sides. Yes, really.

UPDATE: It's actually only got a bolt on the passenger side. Shows you how well I inspected it pre-purchase.

Contest idea: In the comments, how much do you think I paid for a 1995 two-door Civic hatchback, with 81000 km on the odometer?
