B-Day

The classes have been going well. I've been adding and subtracting jokes depending on audience reaction, and I've got the whole thing down quite well by now. I've received some compliments about that, because most Marine Corps classes are dry as dust.

Two classes ago I got a little irritated, I must confess. I was almost done, when the ship called a man overboard drill. So we had to fly off to our shops to muster, then lost a half hour while waiting for the drill to end. Wisely, Gunny P had scheduled a half hour of slippage into the day's schedule, so we'll still get everyone out to chow without missing any classes.

It was actually during my third session that I realized what day it was. I said "Now open your training jackets to Section II, and look for the Follow On NAVOSH training page. Under the "Egress and Explosives" line, put myself as the instructor, and write '03 June 2007' as the date. Wait... June third. That seems familiar. Happy birthday to me."

For desert at dinner tonight they had some nice white cake with strawberry frosting. Mmmm. A delicious birthday cake.

Heh, I, on at least one occation, have messed up the date on paperwork the day of my birthday.  I  had to go back and change the year to the current year, not my birth year, I guess I have filled in that particular date way to many times!

Did anyone sing you happy birthday?  On second thought, maybe you don't want marines singing to you...

Marines and singing don't particularly go together. Back at good ole' Parris Island, we'd been there maybe a week, and we were lying in our racks as the lights were about to go out. We were told to perform the Marine's Hymn as we lay there. I started singing along with everyone else, but after just two or three lines, the drill instructor stopped us all demanding to know who it was that was not performing in a proper recruit-like manner. That would be me, who was singing the melody, as opposed to screaming the lyrics at the top of my lungs.

My singing training was what betrayed me, because I could project enough volume enough to be heard over the other 90 voices that were screaming as loudly as they could.

3 Happy birthday a few days late! I am rather behind on my blog trolling, but we were thinking about you. Hope you got the package from Amazon... or will get it sometime before your next natal anniversary.
