Today I replaced some of the wiring in Mom's basement. A professional electrician had already done some work, but there's much left to be done. I also didn't work all that hard; in the end, all I got was two new outlets. But that included ripping out some older wire whose insulation had not done well with immersion in floodwaters.

I also need to buy some more tools. Mom got some very nice high-quality replacement wire, rated for immersion and in-ground applications. So it's got a really thick jacket on it, and my wire cutters were not doing very well with it. Gee, an excuse to buy new tools: isn't that a shame?

I'm also missing some tools. There are some that I know I used to own, that I couldn't find when going through the boxes of my stuff that are in my Dad's basement. Not obscure stuff, either: I miss my favorite #2 Phillips screwdriver, and my needlenose pliers. I made do without them today, but if I can't find them, I'm going to have to break down and buy replacements.

In general, it was nice to do some wiring, since it's a useful skill and I'm out of practice. I also got some good pointers on what is required by the latest code revisions, courtesy of my brother-in-law, who is busy enough with his own construction projects.

My Mom's cat Katy was just starting to get used to me being around. But today I insisted on hammering and drilling and generally interrupting naptime.

In addition, I don't like being catted during my sleep, so I close my bedroom door quite firmly overnight. This interrupts her normal patrol routine. There was some annoyed batting at the door last night.

She is not pleased at this lack of respect. She may arrange for a horse's head to appear in my car's passenger seat or something like that.
