Bad Internet, No Cookie
I got some mail today... including my bill for interent service, due no later than April 2nd. Hmm. That'd probably explain why my router died yesterday. So tomorrow I have to trot down to my ISP's office during my lunch break and get turned back on again. At the moment, I'm at the USO's free internet cafe.

EerieCon Nine
Now I'm downright depressed. I just found out about
EerieCon Nine, a SF convention happening in Niagara Falls, NY. Guests of Honor will be Steven Brust, Nancy Kress, and James Alan Gardner, all three of which are authors I like; and in Brust's case, I'm basically a slavering fanboy.
Okinawa is nice and all. But times like this I miss my original home.

Yes, I'm with the 1st Marine Air Wing in Okinawa, Japan. I'll be out here for another year or thereabouts.

Ooh Rah, swingin with the wing. How long have you been on "The Rock"?
I was at Camp Hansen for 12 months. I was pretty well intoxicated the majority of the time, being so close to "Sin" city it was kind of hard not to be. That was 16 years ago so I am sure it has changed quite a bit since I was there.
Parts I remember:
1) On the north part of the island there was an amusement park and campground with a 9 hole golf course that we used to go to. We would play golf, get drunk and passout on the beach. Definitelly the best vantage point for sunrise and sunset on water. It was cool (a lot of main land japanese families would vacation there as well so it was also nice to meet and talk to actual Japanese women instead of the usual phillipinos in the bars).
2) There was a very cool waterfall on Hansen, out by the firing range. we put up ropes to climb up and would jump off a pretty high drop (usually after consuming many drinks). The main drawback here was the leaches but they were really more of a nusiance than anything else.
3)There was this extremly awesome restaurant on top of a suit shop right outside the gate of Hansen. It was not much too look at it but I have yet to have a steak as good as the ones we used to get in there every payday.
4)Lots of WWII memorials down on the southern part of the island. The main one I remember was on the cliffs where okinawans jumped rather than surrendering to US troops.
5)In the center of the island, just a little south of Hansen there was a very plush resort type hotel that had beach access to a reef, I did not do a whole lot of snorkeling but what I did do I did there.
If pressed I could probably remember more but again, I am sure the island you are on is a lot different than it was 16 years ago.

Yes, things are a little more "tame" around here now, from what I hear. Even weekend liberty is strictly monitored, as the Japanese have lost patience with the usual assaults and other misbehavior.
I'm on the southern section, so I've seen the various war memorials. I want to go to a museum made from the tunnel complex that was the local defense HQ back in the war, but have yet to make it there. I really need to suck it up and get the week TAD it takes to get a license to drive around here.
Twelve months would have been nice though. It's now two year unaccompanied or three year accompanied. So we get to know the place quite well.

Today we had a little "mando fun". The Captain had the whole shop over at his place for a BBQ. Normally I dislike shop functions, but this one came out quite decently.

Mee.nu Blogging
I'm still new at blogging, and rather than take the easy road and go to
Livejounal or
Blogger, I went with
Pixy Misa's created solution.
Pixy doesn't have the resources of the big companies, and it shows: no premade pretty templates. But I like that; I started writing web pages with a text editor back when the Earth was still cooling, and I'm enjoying getting back to that. If I want this blog to look "cool", then I'd better do the coding necessary to coolify it!
And coolify is now a word, because I said it was.
So anyway, Mee.nu is still a little rough around the edges, but I like it that way, because I can get under the hood a little and make it work exactly the way I'd like it.

I go back and forth on blogging (to blog or not to blog...) mostly because I still think of it as a personal journal rather than a means of communicating with others. Then again, one is fooling oneself if one is using a blog as a "personal" journal -- there's always an audience in mind. Though I suppose one could say the same about paper journals, with their supposed audience of one.
And with that bit of coffee-less "Dammit I'm supposed to be working the 12-9 not 8-5 shift" blathering, welcome to blogging. If nothing else, I'm thrilled that you're going the blog route because due to the nature of forwarded emails, I often have a difficult time keeping your chronology fixed in my head. And it's all about me. (ha ha)

First Light
In astronomy, when a new telescope goes online, it's a big deal. Astronomers call the first picture from a new telescope "First Light" and get all choked up about it.
