More Disasters

On the bus ride back to the barracks yesterday after work, we saw a plume of black smoke form on the other side of the flightline. Speculation was rampant, as we couldn't tell if it was on-base or off-base. When we got near the barracks, the bus driver got a call on his cell phone and terminated the run early, which kind of gave the answer away. From the barracks (which had lost power) we could tell it was near the PX and the chow hall- disaster indeed! I got my camera and headed over to take a closer look.

Fortune was with us. A local contractor has been repairing the roof on the PX, and a crane lifting supplies had smacked it's boom into a power line. The crane was burning, but the wind had blown away from the PX, which appeared intact. Horray! We were a bit concerned for the crane operator, but I have to think that booms hitting power lines is a known hazard, and they would be engineered to isolate the operator from the current.

With no power, I sat at home and read, until I decided I was tired and took a nap. By the time I woke up from the nap, the power was back on, but it was past my bedtime. So I stayed in bed and got a good eleven hours of sleep last night. I'm still kind of logy, but I hope to get to "refreshed" soon.
